Peace, Perfect Peace!

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3 NLT.

It was in the year 1875 when Edward H Bickersteth heard a sermon on the verse above. That same afternoon, he visited an elderly dying relative who seemed troubled. He wrote the words of this hymn as a source of comfort for his relative. Today as I also ponder over this profound verse in Isaiah 26, I can’t help but reconcile our current world with the questions asked in this hymn. I asked myself these questions too. What is perfect peace? What does it take for us to get it?

In touch with the cross

But he took our suffering on him and felt our pain for us. We saw his suffering. We thought God was punishing him. But he was wounded for the wrong things we did. He was crushed for the evil things we did. The punishment, which made us well, was given to him. And we are healed because of his wounds. We all have wandered away like sheep. Each of us has gone his own way. But the Lord has put on him the punishment for all the evil we have done. Isaiah 53:4-6 NIV

Christians from all over the world have recently marked the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. My dear husband also blessed us with his exposition on the cross: For Real. Therefore it was somewhat surprising that I found myself drifting into Isaiah 53, where we get an accurate depiction of the life, humiliation, suffering and finally, the exaltation of Christ. Wondering why God will highlight these short verses to me, I couldn’t help but realise that there’s some richness in these verses God wants to pour into us. This passage draws attention to the intimate relationship God desires with His children.

Change from within

I have been intrigued by the number of people in the Bible who God mightily used, and yet, there was no demand on them to change before He used them. People were picked from their miry clay and set on higher grounds for His purpose; nonetheless, their characters remained the same. God created us and endowed us with our personalities and feelings, which defines who we are as His children. This made me wonder, if God is willing to use us despite our characters and behaviours, then what does He really want from us? What does God want from a relationship with His children?
